Wisconsin License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in Wisconsin?

License plate renewal in Wisconsin replaces your registration card and validation sticker, while the license plate and physical plate remain unchanged. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation administers the process according to Wis. Stat. § 341.28, which establishes a monthly system tied to the date you first operated the vehicle.

  • Cars and light trucks are renewed annually on a 12-month cycle. The expiration month remains the same each year, tied to your initial operation date.
  • Motorcycles, mopeds, and low-speed vehicles are renewed on a biennial cycle, expiring in April of even-numbered years. Light farm trucks weighing up to 12,000 pounds are also renewed every two years, according to § 341.297.
  • Renewal is different from titling. Title transfer only occurs upon sale or change of ownership; renewal never triggers a new title.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Wisconsin License Plate?

Registration expires at midnight on the last day of your designated expiration month. WisDOT sends renewal notices at least 30 days before this date, and the eNotify service sends electronic or text reminders for enrolled owners.

  • Early renewal window opens 180 days before expiration, according to the WisDOT registration page. This six-month lead is generous by national standards.
  • No grace period applies. A $10 late fee is charged for any car, light truck, motorcycle, or moped renewal received by the DMV after the expiration date.
  • Vehicles typically stored in Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington, or Waukesha counties must pass an emissions test every two years before the renewal portal releases registration. The Wisconsin Vehicle Inspection Program locator identifies nearby test centers.

Wisconsin does not require a statewide safety inspection.

How To Renew Your License Plate in Wisconsin

Before choosing a channel, ensure current liability insurance is on file with WisDOT. If your vehicle requires an emissions test, the result must already be in the system. Gather your plate number and, if renewing by mail or in person, the renewal notice or completed Replacement Notice MV2016.

  • In person at a DMV customer service center offering registration services, present your renewal notice and pay. A $3 service fee per transaction applies. Authorized WisDOT renewal service providers also process renewals up to $16.25 per transaction.
  • Mail the renewal notice and a check payable to “Registration Fee Trust” to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 3279, Milwaukee, WI 53201-3279. Expect a new sticker and registration card within 10 business days.
  • Online renewal at regrenewal.wi.gov requires only your plate number and payment information. The fee section below covers what this payment includes.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in Wisconsin?

The base registration fee is the starting point, but the wheel tax and electric vehicle surcharge can increase the total significantly more than most owners expect. The WisDOT fee chart sets rates by vehicle classes, effective October 1, 2025.

  • Annual car registration costs $85. Autocycles pay $45, and RV trailers pay $15. Trucks weighing up to 4,500 pounds pay $100; the schedule rises from there by gross weight.
  • Motorcycles and mopeds pay $23 every two years, covering the full biennial cycle.
  • The electric vehicle surcharge adds $175 per year for battery-electric cars and light trucks. Hybrid electric vehicles add $75 per year.
  • Municipal wheel taxes range from $10 to $50, and county wheel taxes range from $15 to $40; both may apply to a single vehicle. The WisDOT wheel tax page lists each participating jurisdiction as currently published.
  • Late renewals add a flat $10 fee for cars, light trucks, motorcycles, and mopeds. Vehicles with a gross weight over 8,000 pounds are exempt from the late fee.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in Wisconsin?

Online renewal covers most plate types through the regrenewal.wi.gov portal. The portal accepts credit and debit cards (with a 2.35% convenience fee), PayPal, and ACH bank transfers (no convenience fee). A $0.15 merchant fee applies to each online transaction. Upon submission, the plate expiration date is immediately updated in law enforcement systems. A new sticker and registration card are mailed within 7-10 business days.

Vehicles over 55,000 pounds use a separate heavy vehicle renewal process. Renewals involving a non-operation period over three years also cannot go through the portal. For these cases, visit a DMV customer service center or mail form MV2016 to the Milwaukee address.

  • Mail renewals are sent to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 3279, Milwaukee, WI 53201-3279, with a check payable to “Registration Fee Trust” and the renewal notice or form MV2016.

If the portal can process your renewal, this path provides the quickest confirmation; the office handles what the portal declines.
